“I don’t paint to express any beliefs I have or to share a political point of view or to make a statement. I just paint because I love to paint. I love the fluid movement, I love the colour and the flow of the paint, and the feel of the brush in my hand as it moves across the canvas.

I love the soft sound it makes. It’s a very meditative and relaxing experience for me and it brings me much joy. I hope for all who see my work, that this feeling is showed through my art.” – Alana Lovone Squair

Alana uses alcohol ink on acrylic panels.  She also started painting acrylic on canvas and then sewing into handbags.

ANDREE-ANNE PARADIS

Website: http://www.aaparadis.com

Andrée-Anne Paradis is a French Canadian artist from Calgary.  Her artwork reflects her quest for SIMPLICITY. She is inspired by the magnificent Rocky Mountains that she explores with her partner and their two kids.

Influenced by her background in graphic design, the schematic and geometric shapes give an aspect of visual identity to her creations. She features well-known mountains and peaks. The coloured gradients result from her passion for making her own COLOURS. She essentially paints with the three primary colours, black, and white. She finishes her work by tracing black lines, and contours, which makes the colours pop – always free hand, no tape, no ruler, straight lines. The purity of WHITE on the canvas is reminiscent of calm and minimalism so coveted in the chaos of our current world.

Website: https://www.andrewglazebrook.com/

Andrew Glazebrook is an Alberta artist who spent most of his growing-up years in the hamlet of Rosebud, Alberta. He is inspired by craftsmanship of any kind and draws from the satisfying feeling of being a maker of things which others can see, touch, feel and cherish.

Andrew has recently expanded his business to include the manufacturing of wooden kitchen products. Using the lathe as the primary design tool for each product, his line of kitchen products is intended to be functional art, yet keeping design, quality and craftsmanship in the forefront.  To remain food safe, and uniquely different to common kitchen items, many processes had to be developed further and in many cases, the machines to assist had to be made or modified.

Over the years of learning his craft, Andrew has made a name for his work and has been recognized for his high quality of craftsmanship and willingness to share his knowledge with others. Andrew has taught the art of Woodturning at many schools, universities, and conferences across North America.

Andrew currently resides in Red Deer County with his wife and three children.

Anne-Claire’s paper-cutting poetry is entirely designed and hand cut by her in her studio in Calgary. She is inspired by nature, movement, energy, colours, and patterns. She chooses acid-free papers, draws her own personal patterns on the back, and then cuts them with meticulous care with a scalpel (Exacto knife). It takes hours to see the magic happen, and slowly the paper becomes a real lace.  She works with a professional framer and/or she frames them herself.
Some pieces can also be bought unframed so that the buyer can customize them.

APPLE ISLAND NATURALS

Website: appleisland.ca

At Apple Island Naturals, they believe that everyone deserves to enjoy the beauty of nature and are committed to creating special products for you using natural ingredients. All are handcrafted and never involve animal testing or synthetic ingredients. They are constantly searching for new ways to “go green” and reduce their environmental impact. They use only ethical Canadian suppliers for their ingredients, supplies, and equipment because they believe in employing Canadians. We support local businesses as often as possible.

“I still make everything in small batches so it’s always fresh. I have learned a lot more, and continue to learn, and though I’ll always miss nursing, I still get to help people with my products.  I especially like helping people with skin conditions and allergies, and getting people to switch to natural products by teaching them about synthetic ingredients which are often irritants at best – many are even cancer-causing.  There is no need for anything like that to be in our skincare.   Because I’m getting older, I’ve developed a strong interest in anti-aging ingredients as well and look forward to creating more facial products.”

We are all on this life journey together and my goal is to help as many people as I can, any way I can while also trying to be easy on our planet.  I’ve learned that change happens, that’s just life.  You can be bitter and fight against it, like I did for a while, or you can adapt to it, change yourself, go with the flow, and turn lemons into lemonade.  Apple Island Naturals is my lemonade stand and proof that you can survive and thrive as long as you don’t give up.  Follow your dreams!  If I can do it, you can too!” – Kathy Lind

Born in Moncton, Suzanne LeBlanc has always found inspiration in the outdoors. In 1989, she traded the coastal vistas of New Brunswick for those of the mountains and prairies of Alberta when she moved to Calgary. It was during the period of living in Houston that Suzanne began her artistic journey in earnest exploring different media, techniques, and textures on walls, furnishings, board, and canvas.  Returning to Calgary, Suzanne began developing her artistic expression working alone and with other artists and designers, including Paul Lavoie, McKinley Masters Luxury Homes, Brenda Rozdeba, Liba Labik, and Anna Krop.

Suzanne currently has two obsessions: alcohol inks and encaustic, as evidenced in her recent works. Both media allow her to express her love of the organic, abstract elements of the natural world.

“I have been working with alcohol inks for 10 years, I was introduced to the medium when we bought a piece of art from another local artist.  I just fell in love with the vibrant colours and wanted to work with them.   I have been working with encaustic medium for 5-6 years. I was introduced to it by a mentor, and I was excited by the possibility of creating art using a torch!  I love everything about working with this ancient medium – the way the colours blend, the luminescence, the translucency, the smell and the feel of the medium.  I have taken a number of workshops and classes to learn about the complexities of this medium. – Suzanne LeBlanc

Christine, using Soft Pastels as her medium, creates animals with character and personality, whether that be sweet and peaceful or weird and quirky! Her ultimate goal is that the viewer connects with these little souls she’s created, forging a relationship between them and the little character looking back. She is a 2-D visual artist and the work is created by her.

“I’ve always been fascinated with animals. My body of work is my often whimsical take on the beings that live amongst us, big, small, fur and feathered. I love their quirks, head tilts, little paws and soulful eyes. In my work, I strive to convey the spirit I see in these animals and give a glimpse into their character. Sometimes sweet, sometimes funny, sometimes peaceful. I hope it brings a smile to you. That’s the goal anyways…..” – Christine Normolyle

Darrell Chocolate is a Dene artist from the Northwest Territories, Canada. Originally from a small isolated community called Gameti from the Tlicho region, just north of Yellowknife, Darrell now resides in Yellowknife and has made it his permanent residence since 2005 – but considers Gameti my hometown.

“From as earliest as I can remember growing up in Gameti, I was always fascinated with art whether it was sketching, colouring, or even a little craft activity that would spark my interest in art. I was always intrigued by how the older kids in school would draw animal sketches and be creative with just a pencil and a paper. Even my older brother who is an artist himself would draw animals and landscape sketches that would captivate my young mind at the time would inspire me to draw just as he did.” – Darrell Chocolate

Since 2009, Darrell has been painting with acrylic paint working on wildlife and commissioned portraits. In early 2019 he won the NorthwesTel regional phone book cover art contest and his story got headlines in the north.

DUNCAN TWEED CERAMICS

Categories: Pottery 2023
Booth #: 912
Website: https://www.duncantweedceramics.com/home
“I was lucky enough to find ceramics when I was in high school. I immediately became enamoured by the tactile nature of the clay and the way working in clay requires you to fully immerse yourself in the moment. I took ceramics classes all through high school and by grade twelve was also working under a professional potter, Joseph Woodford.

Following graduation, I attended Northern Arizona University getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts emphasizing in Ceramics and a Bachelor of Science Business Administration emphasizing in Management. During my time there I was exposed to a variety of atmospheric firing techniques, with wood firing and soda firing gaining a majority of my focus. There was something magical about the serendipitous nature of the firing and the way the path of the flame can be recorded on each piece. The subtle transitions of color emphasized by the form and texture of the pot. These qualities became a benchmark that I strive to create in all of my work. After University I took a teaching position at a small community studio in Salmon Arm. BC. My time in the studio is divided between teaching, studio upkeep, and making my own work. I look forward to sharing that work with all of you this November.” – Duncan Tweed

Duncan’s current work can be broken into two distinct categories: functional and sculptural. Each category has its own style and purpose though they share similar methods of creation. The majority of his work is thrown on the potters’ wheel and sprayed with several glazes. This allows subtle transitions between colours and textures within each piece. His work is designed to be used daily as well as able to be displayed within the home.

His sculptural work pushes the boundaries of a vessel without function. Though wheel-thrown and hollow it would be, for the most part, impractical to use these forms for most material purposes. He creates these forms with the intention that they’re able to stand alone as works of art. He alters the form’s volume, shape, and texture to create a canvas on which to glaze. Through the glazing process, I create depth and contrast on the form through the use of multiple layered glazes, occasionally using more than six glazes on a single piece. Others are fired in atmospheric kilns, (wood, soda, or salt) which yield spontaneous and occasionally serendipitous results.

FARAH CORNELY

Farah Cornely believes that art can have tremendous power over life, and she hopes that her creations will change someone’s perspective of life – giving the little strength they might need to go on, bring joy, and most of all, help focus on what matters.

To create her stunning pieces, Farah starts by preparing and then cleaning the mug. She then does her abstract art on it. It then has to dry before adding the gold lines. Once the gold is dry, she checks for any corrections and cleans it again and then applies the final coat before firing.

As for the Resin jewelry, she mixes her colours with the resin before pouring them into a mould or her free-form space. Once the resin is cured, she drills the holes and puts the earring and chains together.

“After many years of working hard and raising a family, I decided to clean out some old closets and found a lot of old needles and wool. I was looking for a change and someone whispered into my ear and said – start knitting again.

After trying many different styles and types of wool and a lot of research with respect to what works with what, I found a love for the needles, wool, fashion and creativity again.  As my passion grew and I tried new designs, creating, and experimenting with different wools, I knew that this was the direction I wanted to go.

Each piece is made with passion and pride for the comfort of keeping you fashionably warm.” – Rose Chiron-Howitt

In 2019 Kerry reintroduced ceramics into her artistic practice. She works to challenge the media and the conventional techniques used with clay. She explores hand building, wheel throwing, and slip casting, often warping, tearing, and adding textures after the original forming. She has also recently started adding metal elements into pieces inspired by her jewelry work and her copper paintings.

Kerry pieces are one-of-a-kind ceramics. It is important to her to have evidence of the making process visible to the viewer, creating a history or story within each piece. She makes, decorates, and fires all of her own work.

Inspired by the copper paintings that Kerry has been developing since 2015, she introduced a collection of jewelry in November 2019. The work explores Sterling Silver, Antique Bronze, and Copper and endeavours to juxtapose harder geometric shapes with organic fused metal while playing with depth through textures and patinas. Kerry has included a variety of casting and fabrication methods in her new collection, each of which is a unique one-of-a-kind piece. Kerry’s works are finished with various types of patinas to enhance the depth and textures and create a rustic or antique feeling in each piece.

Each piece is hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind silver, copper, antique bronze, or a combination of each. Like her ceramics, it is important for her to have the history of the making process evident in each piece. Most pieces are finished with an antique patina so that you can see all of the textures created through the process.
